Pick of the best beach cafes
Situated on the southern tip of Weymouth, the Crab House Café™ is a single-storey wooden shack overlooking Chesil Beach. With its frilly pink umbrellas, lobster pots, fishing paraphernalia and rowing boat filled with flowers and herbs, it may at first look a little contrived, twee even, but this is a beach shack by which others should be judged. Ex- chef Nigel Bloxham took over three years ago and also inherited the oyster farm in front of the café. This means the freshest Portland Royal oysters are a permanent fixture on the menu.
“We source only fish caught in English waters and most of it is from Devon, Cornwall and Dorset,” says Nigel. “The menu changes daily and often twice a day, due to different fish being landed locally.”
Dishes could include gurnard with olives, tomato passata and basil or sole grilled with caraway seeds, but no visit is complete ordering crabs to crack.
These crustaceans arrive complete with a hammer, nutcracker and fork so you can scrape out every delicious morsel of meat.
